The Trinity Church in the village of Volno
The Trinity Church in the village of Volno is one of the few architectural monuments of “Vilno Baroque style “ that has remained intact.
It was built in 1768 as a Basilian Uniate church. Since 1632 Basilian monks had owned there a Holy Trinity monastery which was originally built owing to Krzysztof Kamensky, deputy steward of Novogrudok, and his wife Helena Drucka-Gorska who funded its construction. There was a school at the Basilian monastery where Rafael Slizen (1804-1881), an art critic, architect and sculptor studied.
In 1839 the monastery was converted into a convent which existed until 1873 when it was closed down. The nuns were moved to Minsk Transfiguration Convent.
In 1895 the church was re-consecrated into an Orthodox church. The stone building of the monastery was lost, and the outbuildings were used by Minsk Convent.
The church is a stone 3-nave and 2-turret basilica with a semicircular apse, side sacristies and transepts.
The architectural décor of the main facade is “broken” corbel, pilasters, military paraphernalia, as well as the main decorative focus of the interior – the high altar built as a colonnade with curvilinear entablements decorated with a sculptural group of angels which corresponds to the architectural esthetics of the 18th century.
An 18th century icon depicting St Nicholas is kept in the church.
